Shark Iron

5 Oct

One of the tools I most depend on in the sewing I do is my iron! I had been wanting a new one for quite a while as mine was quite dilapidated and very tempermental. Therefore I was so happy to find this Shark at Goodwill -and on 50% off day! It is in beautiful condition. And it works very well except when it automatically shuts off after being on for a while, I have to unplug it to make it start again. No big deal though, because my old one was just like that! I was so used to the old thing that didn’t heat up as hot as it was supposed to that I burned one of my towels! 😦 I wasn’t used to the mega steam either! But since we got used to one another, we are great friends. After I started using the new one, my old iron gave up the ghost completely! So I was extra thankful that God provided me with a new iron at an excellent price!

I love getting my crafting supplies from Goodwills and other thrift stores. Part of it is the challenge of finding good stuff at the right prices. It does take time and patience though!

Work in Progress

30 Aug

I enjoy variety, but sometimes it just feels like I have a LOT of stuff going. Recently I read an article on Homemadeology that inspired me to try to manage my time better. Basically I found a daily planner here and decided to try to structure my days a bit better. It’s fun when I can get everything done, but gets a bit overwhelming when I see how much I don’t get done. Here is a bit of a picture of some of the projects I have started.Towels. I ‘went shopping’ in our upstairs / loft and found some fabric to use for my towels. I looked at WalMart twice to find fabric to match my red towels, but never found anything I thought was good enough. My next plan was Joann’s. In the meantime, I thought, why not look through our stuff at home…. I am doing some with a more western/Indian theme, hoping to sell them locally. I found some vintage-looking stuff I decided to use. I also found one that I like, but not sure if anyone else will. It is the one on the left in the following picture. Beings I already cut it I’m not sure what else I can do with it, but I can’t decide if I should put it on the red towel or a black one. I was going to put the blue top on the light brown towel, but I may have chickened out.Bags. I have been slowly working on those as I have time. They are a nice sewing project that doesn’t require much energy, which is nice right now. Hair Nets. Awhile ago I posted that I crocheted a bunch of inventory hair nets. At the end of July, it seemed someone turned on a switch and I started getting sales again!! The funny thing though is that customers rarely purchase the color that is well stocked. 🙂 So I am still crocheting hair nets! Don’t get me wrong, I love the sales and I really don’t care what color they are and it’s no incovenience to make new ones! 😉Me. I am always a “work in progress” 🙂 but just now I feel more so as a head cold / sore throat has caught hold of me. It really made rounds in our family so I’m not terribly surprised I got it, I’m just hoping to keep it from settling in my chest. I retired to my recliner yesterday, but have been feeling a lot better today. I still am contenting myself mostly with hand work though. Like sewing buttons on towels and crocheting hair nets. I just got a bunch of buttons from Supplies From Me to You, a local etsy shop. They are very nice and I got excellent service! If you are wondering why all these towels are dark/black, it’s because I did all the dark ones first so I wouldn’t have to change my sewing machine thread.  🙂

That pretty much sums it up. Except for reading my books! 🙂 I don’t consider that work though so I decided not to include it in this list. What projects have you been working on?

Buttoned Hanging Hand Towels

16 Aug

The Buttoned Hanging Hand Towels  in my etsy.com shop are very practical items. Everyone needs a towel, right? 🙂 And even better it’s buttoned into place so it can fall on the floor every time you dry your hands!

I currently have 10 towels listed and hope to do more soon. I have been experimenting with different colors, ect. Trying to think outside of the box! When I think about making things, I almost always think of things I would like. Of course not everyone likes the same things as me, so the challenge is to imagine what other people would like. A good example is the brown & pink towel in this picture. I don’t like paisleys! But I thought someone else might… so here goes! 🙂

If you prefer a more feminine looking kitchen, I have a pretty floral or a purple butterfly towel.

I was looking back in my blog history and found my first towels I posted! They have come a long way since then! That is part of the challenge (fun), though. Always improving and learning how to do better. Customer satisfaction is top priority!

Carseat Canopy

19 Jul

Baby Carseat canopy is perfect for protecting your precious baby! It is fully lined and made of cotton. The top ties keep the cover in place and still allow you access to the handle of the car seat. The back is made of a coordinating cotton fabric. The ruffle on the peek-hole is made of the same fabric as the back. The front bottom edge is finished with blue piping. The ties are wide red ribbon.  The bonus strap-covers are made of the same fabrics. They velcro over the straps. The canopy is perfect for protecting your baby from the weather.

This Baby Canopy is lovingly hand-made by my sister-in-law. She has two children she dearly loves, and is very creative in making things for them and others.  We are planning to offer more of these covers so please check back.

The canopy will be perfect for your baby or for a baby shower gift! Head on over to my shop for more details! Let me know what fabrics and colors you would like to see in this item!

New Gift Bags

12 Jul

I used to make gift bags from fabric scraps we had laying around here and people gave me, like this. That is fine with me, but they weren’t selling very good, at least not very fast! :/ I then went off to JoAnns and bought me some fabrics that I thought looked a bit more stylish. 😉 Those aren’t selling that fast either. …

I did sell two of the pink polka dot ones!

I can’t decide which is my favorite; I love them all!

This picture makes the brown & blue bags look really nice, I think! Wouldn’t that be fun to be having a party and line up all the bags like this!

What fun you could have packing all your small things in pretty pink bags to put in your suitcase! I forgot to take a picture of the suitcase so these are just sitting here ready to go in. 🙂

If you aren’t having a party or traveling you can use this lime green drawstring bag for a cute purse on your shopping trip!

The lavender stripe bag is perfect for storing little projects.

Visit my etsy shop for more info on these bags and others! Thanks for stopping by!

Vacation!

30 Jun

I had a wonderful vacation the end of May/beginning of June. I traveled with a friend to Kansas and to Illinois. I had a great time with friends and family. In Kansas I helped my young friends learn how to make my towel toppers and my gift bags. That was fun. I hadn’t planned to do that, so I didn’t have any patterns or anything a long. But we figured it out!

I really enjoyed my Aunt’s rose garden Illinois. She has beautiful roses!

When I came home, I had a little time adjusting back to the heat -and the allergies! So it took me awhile to get back into my sewing and other projects. I started with the easy projects. I had bought a bunch of fabric before I left to make bags, but didn’t get them sewn up. I was getting a little worried that the colors are to ‘springy’, but I finally sold 2 pink ones today!

While I was on vacation, my shop was not. My Mom, bless her heart!, shipped my orders for me! That was so nice of her and was nice to be able to keep the Etsy shop open. I didn’t renew auctions on eBay so that wasn’t going the whole time I was gone.

When I did start feeling better after my trip, it was time to do some sewing for the family. Mom and I sewed about 5 dresses in about 3 days. Those were for my two nieces. I made them look-a-likes because I knew they were going to be together.

Now down to business. In the next few weeks, I need to get lots of towel tops sewn and the rest of my bags. I also have some ideas for a new project. I haven’t had time to try it out though.

I hope everyone is having a great summer!

Purple Stripe Gift Bags

18 Apr

Last week I did a custom order for 6 of these purple striped gift bags. It was fun to do them. I had them all sewed up before she ordered, but I added the flowers to the five of them that didn’t already have them.  The one bag was smaller than the others, but she said she wanted it anyway. Please excuse the background. 🙂 I didn’t set up my studio properly.

Of course I forgot to ask her where she was from before I quoted her a shipping price. Again. I need to put a post-it-note beside my computer. Oh well, that’s another subject.

I was very excited that I had enough fabric for this order! I make my gift bags from left over fabric from other projects. Most of the bags are one of a kind and I ‘m not able to make more because I used up the fabric.

I also got a request for yellow bags, but that order didn’t come to anything. I went a head and made some yellow ones just in case someone else wants yellow bags. These aren’t cotton, they are polyester.  I listed the first one in my Etsy shop today. You can view it here.

That’s about all I’ve gotten done for my shop this week. I forgot to get interfacing when we were in Phoenix last week, so I can’t do my towels. I did do some crocheting. My biggest problem is lack of motivation! The allergies around here are so bad right now. I finally took Benadryl last night so I felt better this morning. Until I sat outside for a while this afternoon….

My Brown Towel is Back

13 Apr

I guess the brown hanging towel is everyone’s favorite according to my sales records. The other night I took the risk of buying two packs of them. Don’t laugh, that was a huge investment for my teeny tiny shop! 🙂  I got them back in my store today, but they have new tops. I am running out of the fabric I was using to make the tops so I bought some at JoAnn’s the other night. It doesn’t match as good as I would have liked since I was going on my memory, which was a little foggy at 8:00 pm. I did take a sample of the old along, but in Wal Mart I used it to match buttons and that is the last the sample was seen. It might still be floating around in Wal Mart… But I hope everyone likes the new Brown Hanging Hand Towel!I also have a unique version of the brown towel. I put a turquoise blue top on it. 😉 I think it’s kind a neat. And of all things it’s made it into 3 treasury lists already! This one is my favorite:

Hang it upWhich of my towels is your favorite? I’d love to hear from you! Have a great weekend.

Hanging Hand Towels and Cloth Gift Bags

11 Apr

Looking for the perfect gift for Mother’s Day? I have new hanging hand towels in my etsy shop that would make great gifts for a special Mom! Plus you can put them in pretty Cloth Gift Bags.  You can find them all in the Mother’s Day section of my shop.

I was really excited to finally find some pretty towels at our local store again. For a long time they didn’t have much of anything. I have a number of gift bags, but not very many are alike. Last week a couple days I finally got really motivated and got a bunch of bags done. If you don’t see what you want in the Mother’s Day Section, take a look at the regular hanging towel section or the Party Favor / Gift Bag section.

Happy Shopping! 🙂

Hi Again!

30 Mar

This blog kinda sorta died out at the end of last year. It seems blogging isn’t really my Thing. The main Thing is I’m busy doing other things that seem a little more important to me. I was quite surprised when I logged in and saw that people are still actually looking at the blog! Right now I’m going to post some pictures of my recent life (a very small part of it, that is). I’m not sure where, if, or when this blog is going so I won’t comment on that right now.

Sewing Space - Cleaned & Organized

Sewing Space - Cleaned & Organized View 2

Recently I have been slowly working on cleaning up and organizing my sewing space. (I don’t have a sewing “room” so I’m calling it my “sewing space”.) It’s nothing fancy and it’s not done yet, but it’s working out well for now. My sewing space has become a little more important as I have been adding different products to my Etsy shop.

We enjoyed beautiful snow March 18 & 19! It was pretty cold, but very pretty while it lasted. This week we have enjoyed signs of Spring again!

Have a blessed weekend!

New Hanging Hand Towels

6 Sep

I have two new hand towels in my shop! The one is a fun coffee theme and the other is a nice red one. I have a lot of fun making these.

Here are some pictures:

Here is the coffee one. I found some really neat wooden buttons at a thrift store in town and that is what I used on these.

I put plain white tops on the red ones and thought it turned out pretty nice!

The apple one with a red top is still available, too.

Hanging Hand Towels

11 Aug

I finished two more hand towels and listed them in my Etsy shop yesterday! They are both the same designs I had before, but the tops I made red instead of off-white. The apple one I like with the red, but the other one… not sure! It might be two red, but someone out there probably likes red!

I also changed the pattern. I wanted it narrower at the bottom and I took away the points and made the ends flat. I like the flat ends, but I didn’t get it much narrower -maybe 1/4″ or so!

Handmade Girl’s 5T Pink Jumper Dress Amish Mennonite

11 Jul

Handmade Girl’s 5T Pink Jumper Dress Amish Mennonite

I renewed the auction for this jumper on eBay today. I have actually had it on eBay for quite a while. That’s why I don’t make dresses to sell anymore; it takes them ‘forever’ if ever to sell. The occasional one that I do try to sell, I make a size that someone in my family can wear if it doesn’t sell. There’s always someone else I can give it to, also.

This particular Jumper is made of 100% cotton and a very simple, cute  pattern. It would look great with a white blouse.

HERE ARE THE FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:

Top of shoulder to waist: 11″

Shoulder to bottom of hem: 33 1/4″

waist: 26″

back opening: invisible zipper

sleeve: sleeveless

Handmade Bag Pictures

8 Jul

I got this bag done and here are the pictures. I put a zipper in the top so I can use it as a purse. That was a challenge. I actually let Mom do the sewing of the last part so I wouldn’t get so frustrated at my sewing machine. It has this habit of breaking thread lately.

I used the smaller option of the pattern Simplicity 2830. The outside, pockets, and handles are cotton.

For the lining I used a dark blue cotton. Plus inside I have a stiff fabric (I’m not actually sure what it is). I didn’t use the stiffer fabric alone for the lining because it is old-fashioned bright yellow with green flowers! Next time I want to find my real canvas to use, because the yellow stuff still isn’t quite stiff enough.

The handles are just long enough to hang comfortably on my shoulder if I want to.

I have always preferred the smallest possible purses. 🙂 So this thing looks very big to me. Amazingly all my stuff fit in it though! This picture shows it stuffed full of stuff:

I got to use it already yesterday. I made my monthly visit to the hospital infusion center for my IVIG and my book actually fit inside my purse! So I didn’t have to take two or three bags in to hold all my stuff. It depends what I take though.

I used to think I would get lots of stuff done just sitting there for 4 hours. I usually never looked at most of the stuff I took along, so I quit taking it. I’m usually so sleepy from the Benadryl I can’t concentrate and it doesn’t work to crochet with an IV in my hand! I didn’t even sleep yesterday, though. Probably because my book was so interesting! It is also one of the saddest books I’ve ever read though.

Holiday & New eBay listings

4 Jul

Hello! I hope had a great weekend and are enjoying a relaxing day! I had a nice weekend. Yesterday was a blessing to be in church and to fellowship with Christian friends. Last night we were also blessed with a wonderful rain shower!! We here in AZ love rain showers as they don’t come very often. When we saw it was probably going to rain, my brother and I took our hammocks out to the front porch (it has a roof over it). It was so much fun to lay there and enjoy the rain and the lightening. It did get really windy though and we came running in when we started getting soaked! I realize though that many parts of the US won’t call a rain shower a blessing as they have ‘too much’ water.

I didn’t do anything to celebrate the holiday today, but I did have fun working on different projects around the house in a relaxed frame of mind. Unfortunately, I didn’t get my projects done, so I can’t really say I did much! I cut out a bag I’ve been wanting to make. Actually, I cut out a practice, because I don’t want to use the material I have picked out until I know if my idea is going to work.

I have really been into bags lately. I made one for my sister-in-law for her baby shower. I planned to do a game involving a diaper bag, however I had no diaper bag to use!! So I quickly threw together a simple bag here about the day before the party. Then I made her little girl a matching one for her 5th birthday. Sorry I don’t have pictures to show you. I will take pictures of this one I am making now, if it turns out ok. 🙂

When I was done with that, I sat down at my sewing machine for about 2 minutes and decided I didn’t feel like sewing. Does that ever happen to you??! Hmmm. Now to come up with another project….

Someone told me recently I should crochet baby blankets. I don’t know about that as I haven’t done too well with afghans. But that is what I started this afternoon. I have 3 or so rows done and it is going very well. The pattern I decided on though has quite a few ‘holes’ in it for the poor baby to get his fingers caught in so it might just turn into a wrap or lap robe of some kind. I am using small yarn: baby weight or sport weight whatever it’s called. And a large hook: size I. So hopefully it won’t take too long to get it done!

Tomorrow I will probably go back to normal projects again. It has been fun though to spend a day doing out of the ordinary things.

One of the ordinary things I did do was get more listings on eBay. You can see them here.

New Towels in mydesertdeals Etsy shop

1 Jul

Here are the New Hanging Hand towels I listed in my Etsy Shop.

They don’t look too bad in our blue bathroom!

Floral Double Hand Towel with Cotton Fabric Hanger Top

These are my favorite!

What a day!

1 Jul

Yesterday was a day of all trades! 😀 In the morning for a couple of hours I worked on making cards for a couple of hours. I was tired of my pictures and other supplies just lying around and attacked it with a vengeance. (Looks like my next project should be cleaning my desk!) 😦

For another couple of hours or more, I worked on making tops for towels. That is an easy project that keeps me occupied even when I don’t have much motivation.

Stages of a towel top

(It’s not as complicated as it looks. 🙂 )

In the afternoon, I had to take a break and go to a doctor appointment. There I learned I had lost 8 pounds, which really surprised me. (So that’s why I can get into the dresses I couldn’t wear for a while!) I didn’t think it was a big deal, but the doctor asked me what’s going on? I said, “Stress”.  Her quick  reply was “Do you want something to help with your stress?” The way she said it threw me off for a bit. My simple mind was thinking “What can help my stress besides trusting God?!” Before long, I figured out what she was saying and convinced her it wasn’t that kind of stress. I don’t think pills take stress away anyway, they just help you forget! So I think I will be a little more diligent and make sure I take my enzymes (and try not to worry). It’s so hot around here though, no one feels like eating anyway.

After that stressful ( 🙂 ) break, I went back to sewing towels and got them all finished! (Sigh of Relief) I sat down last night to list them and possibly post on here, which turned into editing pictures and listening to music. Oh well, sometimes there’s more important things in life.

To finish out the day I climbed into bed and started reading my new library book. I meant to read only for 30 minutes or so but the book was so captivating all of a sudden I realized I read about half of it. I will tell you more about the book, when I have read all of it.

I hope you have a great day! God Loves You!

ps. Yesterday was a good day for me! I love variety. 😉

History Part 2

27 Jun

If you missed part one you can read it here.

Here is some more of my story. Maybe it will give you a more rounded view of what I am like. I don’t usually sit around crocheting all day. I couldn’t do that if I wanted to because my hands would be sleeping by then. So here are some more of my hobbies.

My other interests include sewing. Most of the sewing I do is for family and friends, but I have occasionally sold some finished products. I used to sell dresses through http://www.modesthandmaidens.com/ but I have discontinued that. I also sold some cloth bags on eBay. That is still in the back of my mind to try that again… Maybe someday!

Another interest I have developed in the last few years is photography. I love to take photos, mostly of nature, and use those photos to make beautiful, inspirational cards. I am just learning in that area so please be patient with me!

Those who know me, know my favorite hobby is reading so don’t be surprised if some “Books” or “Reading” posts show up on my blog although it really has little to do with my other hobbies and activities. I do use reading to de-stress sometimes, though!

Part of what has shaped my life and perhaps caused me to enjoy these hobbies and activities is my health. I have had chronic respiratory illness most of my life. I am thankful for all the support my wonderful family and friends have shown me. Thank-you for always being there for me!!

I don’t want to draw unneccessary attention to my health, or turn this blog into a pity party, but as this is a big issue in my life, I am sure I will refer to it from time to time. I do enjoy comparing notes with others and getting ideas from different sources.
